History of Culbokie

An historical drive through Culbokie from 'East' to 'West'

This gallery of photos will cover properties that have survived from being recorded on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1882 25 inch to the mile. To view these maps download the western half and the eastern half .

We are indebted to Elizabeth Jorgenson, Ottawa for a series of photographs taken in 1913 of properties associated with her ancestors and local views of Culbokie which have been 'hidden' away on the "People of Culbokie" page. Our journey starts here. This was the site of the mill pond.

Shepherd's Cottage c1962. The mill pond was off to the left and the lade ran past the front of the cottage.

Used to be called the Shepherd's Cottage. The occupier was in charge of the sluices from the Mill Pond. The lade originally went past the front of the cottage where the car is parked.

The lade can be discerned as a shallow trough running down the left-hand side of the road to the Mill

The surviving structure of the Mill. It is half the height and half the depth front to back.

Remains of a side building

Same building; the lade came in on the right and is still discernible along the side of the road.

As captured in water-colour in 1879. The building in the previous photos can be seen to the left of the Mill.

Findon Mills, at the time of the maps it was single storey and thatched.

One day this view as you enter the village will disappear if flats are built!

Modern view of Woodside. Turn into Ferindonald and this is almost 'lost' amongst the new houses.

Directly opposite the previous photograph. A few remnants of previous dwellings behind it.

Culbokie's only listed building. Beaufort House.

The extension is now lost and would have been the oldest building in Culbokie.

A shop of the 1970s and the old forge. Do you have a photo showing the petrol pump?

A recent memory of a now demolished wall of the orchard to make way for an improved car park for the shop.
