Active Travel Route

August 2025 the CCT made this announcement;

We are delighted to share the news that The Highland Council is moving forward with the Active Travel Route along the main road through Culbokie. This is a project CCT initiated in 2019, working with consultants to produce draft designs which were refined through a series of consultations with residents. In 2024 we handed over control to The Highland Council, to take advantage of their expertise in engineering design and tendering, and finally, earlier this year, they were awarded funding for construction of the scheme.

More details of the project are available on the CCT website, and in the report
produced in June 2021 by Sustrans summarising all this.

But in summary the aim is to make it safer and more pleasant to walk, cycle or “wheel” through the village. This will mean supporting the 20 mph speed limit through the village with additional traffic calming measures, and (as far as possible) establishing 2 metre wide footpaths on both sides of the B9169, with new pedestrian crossings at key locations. A Dingwall firm, Strath Civil Engineering, will carry out the work, and we gather they have already started work establishing their compound in the large layby just outside the village, heading towards Cromarty. They plan to start work at that end of the village and work their way through to the SW end, by the Carn Mor junction. This will inevitably mean some disruption, but the end result will be a safe route for adults and children to get around the village – something we have been working towards since the early days of CCT, and others were working on even before that. There have been times when the idea seemed beyond our reach – but with luck and perseverance, and support from the Scottish Government, we’re looking forward to seeing the finished result in time for next summer!

Our aim is to record this historical event with a series of photographs as the work progresses.
